If Britain can not
afford a national jet like America ,
Airbus has proposed that the Prime Minister and Royal Family travel in
converted air tankers on foreign visits instead.
Airbus said A330 MRRTs – known as the Voyager and used by the Royal Air
Force to refuel fighter jets or carry troops – could be modified to carry VVIPs
when not in operational use.
Robin Southwell, head of Airbus owner EADS in the UK and president of trade body ADS, said the
aerospace industry had “let down” Mr Cameron by allowing him to travel on a
trade mission to Asia in an American-built and
Angolan-owned Boeing aircraft.
He said: “I would not see this [proposal] as representing a net cost to the
hard-pressed British taxpayer, as no one plane would need to be allocated
full-time.”
Airbus has yet to make a formal proposal to the Government. However, a Downing Street spokesperson said the Prime Minister would
be interested “if it meets our needs and doesn’t affect military operations”.
