UK considers defence posture for independent Scotland

The future of Royal Navy shipbuilding became the latest political football in the debate over Scottish independence in February, after Liberal Democrat leader of Portsmouth City Council Gerald Vernon-Jackson wrote to Minister of Defence Philip Hammond to call for a ban on new orders being given to Glasgow shipyards until after any referendum. Vernon-Jackson said that it would be "really stupid" to award contracts to shipyards that might be outside the United Kingdom by the time the ships are built
