New Delhi : Defence Minister
AK Antony
is scheduled to meet the three chiefs (of the armed forces) - General VK Singh,
Air Chief Marshal NAK Browne and Admiral Nirmal Verma - at a pre-scheduled
meeting of the Defence Acquisition Council today.
The chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Coast Guard, the Defence Secretary and Defence Production Secretary will also be present in the meeting which will discuss and finalise procurement proposals for Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and DRDO.
Incidentally, the Defence Minister and the Army Chief met last evening at an event and chatted one-on-one.
This is for the first time after last week's controversy that the Defence Minister will chair a meeting where the Army Chief will be present.
The Army Chief's revelation that he was offered a bribe six months after he took office in 2010 led to renewed attention to how equipment is bought for the Army. The sale of 7000 trucks to the Army by a company named Vectra is being formally investigated by the CBI. Public sector unit BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited) buys Tatra parts from Vectra and assembles the trucks inBangalore and these are
then sold to the Army.
General Singh, however, issued a three-para statement on Friday stressing that these developments should not be read as a battle between the government and the Army. He said that "rogue elements are trying to create a schism between the Defence Minister and the chief." His comments came after the Defence Minister said yesterday that "all three service chiefs enjoy the confidence of the government"- a declaration that sought to rescue his relationship with the chief from an unprecedented low.
