India To launch Spy Satellite In April 2012

March 14, 2012

India will launch it's home-made spy satellite next month. A spy satellite (officially referred to as a reconnaissance satellite) is an Earth observation satellite or communications satellite deployed for military or intelligence applications.

"The Radar Imaging Satellite (RISAT-1) is likely to be launched in the second half of April from Sriharikota Space Port," an Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) official said.

The satellite has a unique capability of imaging during day and night and in all weather conditions, according to ISRO officials.

At 1,850 kg, Risat-1 is the heaviest microwave satellite to be built by India.

It would be used for disaster prediction and agriculture forestry, and the high resolution pictures and microwave imaging could also be used for defence purposes.

Spy Satellites can beam back hi-res pictures and other critical data for both civil and military use. India has the largest constellations of Remote Sensing Satellites in the world providing hi-resolution imagery in a variety of spatial resolutions ranging from more than a meter to 500 meters. India is a major player in vending such data in the world market.
