K-15 Missile Successfully Test Fired

March 14, 2012

After many postponements, the DRDO finally test-fired India's most sophisticated submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM), code named K-15. "K" Missile or "K-X series Missile" is a series of Submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) developed by India to boost its second strike capabilities and thus the nuclear deterrence. The Information about this family of missiles has mostly been kept secret.

The weapon system was reportedly tested from an underwater launching platform off the Visakhapatnam coast on Sunday.

The missile was successfully launched from a Pontoon (replica of a submarine) positioned nearly 20 feet deep in the Bay of Bengal and 10 km off the Andhra Pradesh coast. The second test of the same missile is scheduled for March 14.

The test was successful and the missile travelled nearly 700 km before zeroing in on the target. All mission parameters were met.

The K-15 can carry a conventional payload of about 500 kg and be fitted with tactical nuclear warhead. With this missile test, India has added yet another active deterrence to it's immediate rivals.

This missile is an advanced clone of the Naval version of Prithvi and is designed to be exclusively launched from a submarine.
The K-15 is close to the world class Tomahawk cruise missile of the US. It is India's direct answer to Pakistan's Babur missile. The DRDO had unveiled it's land variant - Shourya and has been denying the K-15 or B-05 missile test since the beginning to avoid media glare. The DRDO on Sunday tested a scientific concept which is still under development. "The DRDO is still evaluating it's mission parameters," Programme director A K Chakrabarti said.

The top secret indigenous "K" missiles are faster, lighter and stealthier.
