Royal Navy sets out helicopter transition plans

The UK's Commando Helicopter Force (CHF) will have replaced its ageing Westland Sea King HC.4 and Lynx AH.7/9A platforms for the AgustaWestland Merlin HC.3/3A and the land-based variant of AW159 Lynx Wildcat respectively by 2016, a senior CHF official confirmed to IHS Jane's in mid-March. Speaking aboard the re-roled helicopter carrier HMS Illustrious during Exercise 'Cold Response 2012' off Norway, the commander of the deployed tailored air group and commanding officer of 846 Naval Air Squadron (NAS), Lieutenant Colonel Jaimie Roylance, spelled out the transition process
