Power assist: EMALS era dawns for a new generation of carriers

In late 2011 the Electromagnetic Systems Group of General Atomics marked a significant programme milestone with the delivery of the 12th and final energy storage system motor generator for the Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) to be installed on board Gerald R Ford (CVN-78), the US Navy's (USN's) first-of-class CVN-21 class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. Having delivered the first motor generator set to the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) in May 2011 - and so aligning to the in-yard dates set by Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) at Newport News, Virginia - the last four motor generators were in fact ready to deliver 30 days early
