US Navy orders second ocean research ship

Dakota Creek Industries has received a USD70.97 million contract from US Naval Sea Systems Command to begin detailed design and construction of a second Ocean-class auxiliary general oceanographic research (AGOR) ship. The award for AGOR 28 to the Washington state-based shipbuilder follows a similar contract for lead ship AGOR 27 and brings the US Navy's investment in the programme to approximately USD145 million

US Navy cancels JAGM to focus on SDB II

The US Navy (USN) has opted to terminate development of the Joint Air-to-Ground Missile (JAGM) and pursue the Small Diameter Bomb II (SDB II) which will begin deliveries in Fiscal Year 2017, according to the USN's FY13 budget submission. Cancellation of JAGM is part of the Department of Defense's (DoD) FY13 funding request for USD10.3 billion for USN and US Air Force (USAF) missile systems

US DoD cuts space spending by 22 per cent

Four days before the launch of the first US Mobile User Objective System (MUOS) communication satellite, the Department of Defense (DoD) published its Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 funding request seeking USD8 billion for space-based and related systems. Pentagon trims FY13 space programmes budget by 22 per cent

For Fiscal Year 2013 the US Department of Defense (DoD) is requesting USD8 billion for space-based programmes: 22 per cent less than in 2012 due to changes to or cancellation of programmes, such as the US Air Force decision to terminate the Defense Weather Satellite System in January 2012. The budget request includes USD167.4 million for research, development, test and evaluation (RDT&E) and procurement of the Mobile User Objective System (MUOS)

TRACER embarks on operational deployment

US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) has deployed a new radar for operation on US Army C-12 intelligence aircraft, which is intended to penetrate dense foliage and detect buried or concealed objects. The Tactical Reconnaissance and Counter-Concealment-Enabled Radar (TRACER) system is to support SOUTHCOM's counterterrorism and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, manufacturer Lockheed Martin said on 22 February
